Vacation Destinations: It's a Woman Thing

DW staff (jam)May 28, 2005

When it comes to deciding where a couple is going to spend their holidays, women are on top. A new survey shows that females generally take charge when it comes to getting away from it all.

The poll, commissioned by Deutsche Welle and carried out by the Forsa research institute, found that 37 percent of women make the call when it comes to planning vacations. Only 24 percent of those men asked said they made the decision on where to go.

The survey asked close to 1,100 German citizens who are currently living in a relationship.

The field of fashion, women also said they had the last word. A full 96 percent of them said their clothing choices were their concern, and theirs only. When it came to dressing their male partners, 40 percent said they played a deciding role. Men, however, have a somewhat different picture when it comes to clothes shopping, with 69 percent saying they were lords and masters of their own clothes closet.

One area, however, that clearly remains a male-dominated domain is the car. Only 17 percent of those women asked said they had the final word when it came to buying an automobile. Almost two-thirds of men asked said they were the ones to say yea or nay about any new vehicle.

A small percentage of men, six percent, did however admit that even when it comes to this traditionally male jurisdiction, they preferred to leave matters in female hands.
