The Varus Battle - New Museum has opened today

Constanze TressMay 15, 2009

"Varus, give me back my legions!" That was the famous lament two thousand years ago this month when Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus heard that ten thousand soldiers under the command of General Publius Varus had been wiped out. At the battle of Teutoburg Forest the German chieftan Arminius dealt Varus ,and the Roman Empire, a crushing blow that would guanentee the freedom of the northern German tribes for centuries to come. The Kalk-riese Museum and Archaelogical park re-opened today to mark the occcasion. It's located at what researchers are almost certain was the very site of the battle, north of the city of Osnabrück.
