Spanish startup set to launch free, legal e-book service

May 3, 2011

24Symbols is taking the model pioneered by Spotify, Pandora and Hulu, and applying them to e-books. Users will be able to read all kinds of e-books for free, and share them with the blessing of publishers.

Now this past weekend, with gorgeous spring weather in full swing here in Germany, I spent a couple of hours sitting in a cafe reading an e-book on my new Kindle. Now, I paid ten US dollars for that e-book, which is typical for a lot of big titles these days. But what if you could have a subscription to books, like many streaming online music services, like Pandora in the US, or the Swedish startup, Spotify, which is available in some countries around Europe? A new Spanish startup is trying to take this model, and apply it to e-books.
