People in Iceland reject a deal to pay back debts caused by the collapse of an internet bank

Michael BärMarch 7, 2010

The people of Iceland have voted by an overwhelming majority to reject the latest deal to repay Britain and the Netherlands for losses caused by the collapse of the internet bank Icesave. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their savings when the bank failed in the course of the financial crisis in 2008. The government of Britain and the Netherlands paid them compensation and now want Iceland to repay the debt. But in Saturday's referendum, more than 90 percent voted "No".
