Europe is expected to import up to 85- percent of its natural gas supplies by 2030, most of it from Russia. But several proposed pipelines are causing controversy. On Tuesday, the EU's energy chief Andris Piebalgs defended plans to lay a line under the Baltic Sea in spite of protests from several countries, saying the new route would be essential for natural gas supplies into northwestern Europe.
