Security measures were put into place in the schools after threats of a planned attack were posted on the Internet. The troubled and reportedly suicidal teenager allegedly took his grandfather's handgun before he disappeared.

His body was found in a forest near the south-western town of Meissenheim on the French-German border.

"The way he was killed strongly suggests suicide," a police spokesman in the nearby town of Offenburg said. However, police said they would order an autopsy to confirm, declining to give more details.

Authorities had sent out a warning to all the schools in the Baden-Württemberg area on Tuesday after two high school students playing the violent computer game Counter Strike encountered a third person announcing a bloodbath at his school on St. Nicholas Day, Dec. 6 and reported it to their school principal.

Earlier on Wednesday, officers were sent to the three schools to guard the students, whom they also searched for weapons.

Meanwhile officers in cruisers and helicopters scoured the region for the missing pupil, considered a loner.

There is no proof as yet that the 18-year-old boy is the same online boy who made the threat but he was known to have played violent computer games.
