Madrid: Anti-abortion campaigners demonstrate against the Spanish government's plans to liberalize abortion laws

Anti-abortion campaigners have demonstrated in Madrid, protesting against the Spanish government's plans to liberalize abortion laws. Draft legislation, approved by the cabinet last month, would allow abortions on demand for women aged 16 and over, up to the 14th week of pregnancy. It is the latest in a series of ethical issues which have pitted the Catholic church and Spanish conservatives against the leftwing government of Jose Luis Zapatero. His administration has legalised gay marriage and made divorce easier.
