Who's warming up on the field?
England will be without Wayne Rooney in their opening Group B match against Paraguay. Here's a look at the rest of the line-ups.

The anthems have been played, hands have been shaken. Now all we need is the coin toss and the first Group B game can get started.

Paraguay start with the ball and the match is underway.

Joe Cole pulls the first whistle of the match for being offsides.

England are awarded a free kick outside the center circle and Beckham lines it up.

Beck's free kick ricochets off Gamarra's head and into the goal setting off a roar in the Frankfurt stadium.

Villar needs treatment
Paraguay's keeper needs a little help from the training staff after clearing a ball before Owen could get to it outside the penalty box.

Meanwhile the rest of the players head to the sideline for a drink in the 27-degree C (80 F) heat.

Goalie change
Villar won't be able to continue and is replaced by Bobadilla.

England corner
Beckham runs to the left to set up another corner kick that lands in front of Gerrard, who shots the ball over the crossbar.

It's already turning out to be a tough day for Paraguay. As Beckham stands behind an indirect kick and Bobadilla decides how he wants the defense to setup.

Out of danger... for now
Beckham taps the ball to Gerrard, and the ball sails high, again.

The crosses keep coming
Forwards Owen and Crouch are contentedly waiting in and just outside the Paraguay penalty box enjoying their captain's crosses into the goal area.

Crouch flicks the ball to Owen
but Gamarra gets between the two England forwards and stops the play.

Paraguay's first shot
Joe Terry gives the ball away and Valdez is able to get the South American's first shot of the game, but it goes well to the right of goal.

Yellow For Gerrard
The Englishman slide late into Riveros and gets the game's first booking.

Riveros is treated on the sideline but comes back into the match quickly.

Yellow for Valdez
Valdez gets yellow for trying to kick the ball out from behind Beckham and hitting only the back of Beck's legs.

Lampard fires a rocket
Crouch lays the ball back to Lampard who tries his luck with a long-range shot Bobadilla is able to block down and collect.

Gerrard grabs his left knee
A tough attack from Paredes sends down Gerrard who gets some time to walk off the injury before Robinson fires the free kick forward.

Lampard hits the upper deck
Frank Lampard tries to volley the ball to what one can only expect is the goal, but it flies somewhere into fan section 36.

What do we do here?
Not knowing what they should do so far into the English defense, Paraguay lose the ball over the goal line.

Trapped in the corner, Crouch sends the ball out off a defender to win a corner.

Owen offsides
Close but correct, Owen is caught behind the last defender, sending England into a temporary defensive posture.

Paredes fouls again
This time it's Joe Cole who is sent down grabbing a body part after a Paredes foul.

Robinson makes his best move of the game by keeping a chest back from Ashley Cole from going over the line.

Crowd roars for crosses
Cole and Beckham cross the ball to each other twice in front of the goal to the fans' delight -- they'd be happier if one of the players could get a head on one of the balls.

Free kick Paraguay
The kick bounces off a handful of heads but doesn't get Robinson worried.

Valdez is a few blades of grass offsides but is quickly called on it.

Valdez grasps his mouth
An elbow from Ferdinand sends Valdez to the ground, but referee Rodriguez doesn't reach for his cards.

Beckham shoots
Beckham dips and curves his shot just a little too much as it sails outside the post.

Injuries bring four minutes of extra time

Cole falls giving Paraguay a chance
Cole slipped on the sideline giving Paraguay a free chance to waltz into the penalty box and Valdez fires a shot wide of goal in Paraguay's best scoring chance of the match.

Paraguay turn on offense
It took until extra time, but Paraguay have decided they do indeed want to get a goal and push forward.

Halftime whistle
But it's not enough to get an equalizer before both teams head for a drink in the locker room.

England can be pleased with the fact that they are winning in Frankfurt, but it's also clear to Sven-Goran Eriksson that his team will have to crank it up a notch when they meet more demanding opponents.

Paraguay, for their part, took the last 10 to 15 minutes to show this game hasn't been decided yet by locking down their defense and limiting England's chances in the middle of the field.

Valdez chests the ball toward goal and Robinson can't keep it under control, giving Paraguay their first corner of the game.

The four English midfielders are happy passing the ball amongst themselves, giving everyone a chance to take a breath on a hot day.

Lampard, Gerrard, Owen disappoint
So far, so mediocre from a handful of the England players who aren't delivering the type of dominating game English fans were hoping for.

Fans may be painted in different colors but pondering the same question: Is England playing worse or Paraguay better?

Cole sends the ball wide to Beckham who send the ball wide past the goal in England's first attack of the second half.

Maybe it took them some time to get used to the heat, but 15 minutes into the second half England are beginning to push forward again.

Coming off his line too early, Robinson handed Paredes an as-good-as open goal, but the Paraguayan isn't able to capitalize.

Could the slow phases of the second half be coming to an close? The end-to-end action is picking up with both keepers handling the ball following decent chances for England and Paraguay.

Paraguay show they can cross, too
Paredes sends the ball into the England penalty box, hoping a teammate will be able to connect, but is disappointed.

Ruiz makes a change
Bonet heads to the sideline for Nelson Cuevas to have his chance on the field.

Cuevas nutmegs Gerrard with his first touches on the ball. It didn't bring Paraguay toward goal, but enchanted their fans.

England finally push out of midfield and Lampard fires a shot toward goal that Bobadilla parries over the bar.

The tempo picks up as not every pass is intercepted and the players give their supporters a display of dribbling and passing skills to make them raise their voices.

Coaches consult
As the action on the field slows down, both coaches are bringing their heads together with the assistants to figure a new plan and the fans entertain themselves with the wave.

Hargreaves comes in for Joe Cole in England's second substitution.

Acuna decides to take a shot to see if Robinson is paying attention, and the England keeper is, catching the ball with both hands.

Valdez, possibly Paraguay's most active man of match, is caught offsides.

England get the ball into the offensive third and fire two shots toward goal but both are blocked before nearing Bobadilla.

The pace is lacking and none of the players will be upset to hear the referee decided to add only two minutes of injury time.

Twenty-one as Robinson sees, much to his chagrin as the ball continues to bounce to Paraguay players.

There's the final whistle
England wins the first game in Group B.

Carried home by on own goal early in the match, England looked liked they would add to the score line but were held in check by a solid Paraguayan defense. Ruiz's side showed they can play offense in the evenly split second half. Overall it's a performance that showed both teams they will have a lot of work to do before their next matches if they're going to take the field in top form.
