Hamid Karzai is declared the winner in Afghanistan as the run-off presidential vote is cancelled

Constanze TressNovember 2, 2009

Western leaders are offering support to Afghan president Hamid Karzai after he was declared the winner of an election marred by fraud and corruption. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, U-N Secreatary General Ban Ki-moon and Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle were among those offering their public support for Karzai. Their backing comes after the country's Election Commission cancelled an upcoming presidential run-off and declared Karzai the winner.
