Greece: Patras, Gateway to Europe - ej 20.02.2008

Sebastian KatzerFebruary 21, 2008

Patras is one of the most important ports in Greece. The harbour is a major hub for merchandise - and for people. Patras provides access to the rest of EU. Every day hundreds of refugees from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and other countries arrive here. Their planned route usually involves the car ferry to Italy, and thence travel to other European countries. Many refugees have been desperate enough to hide in the undercarriages of trucks. Patras' harbor police is having trouble dealing with the situation. Most of the city's shipping companies have their own private security staff. Report by Peter Hell
