Gazprom turns the taps off on Ukraine in their latest dispute over natural gas supplies - je 01.01.2009 12

Constanze TressJanuary 1, 2009

The Russian energy giant Gazprom says it has cut off natural gas supplies to Ukraine. This after a deadline expired this morning with no agreement over a payment dispute between Kiev and Gazprom. Gazprom says Ukraine owes about 2- Bbillion dollars in back payments. Russia's move has sparked fears that supplies for the European Union could also be hit. The European Commission has urged both sides to return to the negotiating table.
