French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he will use his stint at the helm of the European Union to make it more relevant to people's daily lives. France assumes the EU Presidency today, at a time when doubts about the bloc's effectiveness are once again on the rise following Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon treaty. In a televised speech on Monday evening, Sarkozy said the EU should prove it can protect Europeans worried about high inflation and energy prices.
