Euro 2004: Group by Group

June 12, 2004

The wait is over. The sixteen European Championship finalists are poised to start their campaigns in the opening group exchanges. The four qualification pools have thrown up some fascinating contests.

The qualification stages are a minefield for the teams looking to navigate their way to the knock-out section of the European Championships. With three points awarded for a win, one for a draw and, of course, none for losing, one slip could put your team at the bottom of the group with a mountain to climb.

Only two teams from each of the four groups go through to the quarter-finals where the top teams face the runners-up. That means the winner of Group A will play the second placed team from Group B; the winner of Group B plays the runner-up from Group A and so forth.

To help identify possible outcomes, DW-WORLD has run the slide rule over the four qualification groups.
