EU-Ukraine summit in France: stop short any explicit pledge on future membership - je 09.09.2008 08

An EU-Ukraine summit is due to begin France in a few hours. The European Union is expected to offer Kiev encouragement about closer ties but it will stop short of any explicit pledge on future membership. The summit has taken on new importance in light of the conflict between Georgia and Russia and its implicaitons for other areas with significant Russian populations, such as the Ukraine peninsula of Crimea.
