Burma's opposition leader faces up to five years in jail after new charges are brought against her

Ema Nevenka JülichMay 14, 2009

Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been charged with violating the terms of her house arrest after receiving an unauthorized visit from a US national. Suu kyi is being held in Insein prison along with the American who entered her home after swimming across a nearby lake. Suu Kyi's lawyers say she did not invite the man to her compound where she has been under house arrest for six years. Suu Kyi is due to stand trial next week. She could face five years in prison if convicted. +++SYN-MAZ+++
