Afghanistan: A look back at how Germany's involvement in Afghanistan began

Constanze TressDecember 16, 2009

What began as an airstrike in Afghanistan to destroy two fuel tankers hijacked by the Taliban in Kunduz back in September - has become a huge political issue here in Germany. The attack was ordered by a German commander and carried out by US warplanes. There were a number of civilian casualities among the 142 people killed. The issue led to the dismissal of Gemany's chief of the armed forces and a senior defence official. Later, the defence minister at the time also resigned. But now there are new revelations - that the airstrike also intended to target Taliban insurgents. This - the opposition claims - is a violation of Gerrmany's non-combat mission in Afghanistan. A parliamentary committee today started an investigation into the issue. We first take a look back at how Germany's involvement in Afghanistan began.
