A French consortium has signed a deal with Ukrainian officials to build a steel casing to contain the remains of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The 1986 explosion at the reactor in the former Soviet Union was the worst nuclear accident in history, It released radioactive isotopes into the environment that continue to pose a huge health risk to the population in the area. But most of the radioactive material is still inside the wreckage of the plant. For the past decade the international community has been trying to find a way of dealing with the hazardous remains.
