Israel recommences aid to Gaza
Israel has opened its border to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza for the first time in ten days despite continued rocket and mortar fire from the Palestinians. The first of an expected 90 trucks have started to deliver medicine, fuel, cooking gas and other vital goods to the Palestinian enclave, where most of the 1.5 million inhabitants are said to depend on aid. An Israeli military spokesperson said five rockets and two mortar rounds were fired before dawn, but caused no casualties. On Thursday, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni vowed that Israel would strike back at the militant group, Hamas, which controls Gaza, if the attacks continued. Violence in and around Gaza resumed after a six-month ceasefire ended on December 19.
