Key resignations follow Mumbai attacks
Fallout from the militant attacks on the Indian port of Mumbai continues as both the state head and deputy offered their resignations on Monday. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already accepted Home Minister Shivrav Patel's offer to stand down after Patel said he felt a “moral responsibility” for the attacks. Tensions between India and neighbouring Pakistan are high after the Indian government blamed "elements in Pakistan," and security sources say they believe the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba was behind the coordinated attacks that killed 173 people and injured hundreds in India's financial centre. Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari has appealed to India not to punish his country saying militants could precipitate a war. Meanwhile the White House has announced that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is to visit India this week as a "further demonstration" of US solidarity with New Delhi.
