ASEAN cancels briefing by UN envoy to Burma
Southeast Asian leaders have cancelled a planned briefing by United Nations envoy Ibrahim Gambari on the situation in Burma. The Malaysian foreign minister told reporters that Burma's military junta had expressed its objections during informal talks ahead of the start of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit. ASEAN traditionally reaches its decisions on a consensus basis. Gambari had been invited by Singapore, the host of this year's summit, to brief ASEAN leaders on his two recent visits to Burma. It wasn't clear whether Gambari would go on to meet with delegations to the summit on an individual basis.
