PISA shock and disastrous education standards: something seems amiss in Germany, a country once dubbed a nation of "poets and philosophers". But countless educators make tireless efforts to improve things. For years, the "Laborschule", or Laboratory School, in the city of Bielefeld has been developing new teaching and learning concepts: all-day classes, grade-free subjects as well as the joint teaching of kids of different age. These ideas have been implemented by the Wartburg primary school, awarded the title of Best School in Germany.
