Russia: Exploring Democracy
Once a month, Moscow’s Doc theatre stages the play "Democracy.doc". It’s a piece that requires audience participation: Prompted by the performers, the public is required to develop both the plot and the characters. One any given night, one member of the audience might play Yeltsin, another "the people", another a revolutionary. In the course of the evening, performers and audience will explore the concept of democracy in Russia. According to director Georg Genoux, who hails from Hamburg, every performance is a revelation.
England: A Profile of the Man Known as the Black Farmer
Originally from Jamaica, Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones is a prospective Conservative Party candidate for the Chippenham constituency for the next general election, due no later than 2010. After working in TV, he bought a farm in Devon and became known to locals as "The Black Farmer", which inspired him to set up the brand of the same name, whose products include sausages, chicken, ham and sauces. His main enemies are the big supermarket chains and rural poverty -- and he sees himself as a classic rebel.
Austria: Living, not just existing
Today, people's bodies tend to stay healthier longer than their minds. Dementia is on the rise, with growing numbers of elderly people retreating from the present into their childhood and youth. The founders of psycho-biographical nursing care theory think they should be allowed to dwell in the past. Cornelia Kolden visited an old folks home in Vienna, where the theory is put to the test.
Turkey: Roma district threatened with demolition
Istanbul’s old Roma district, Sulukule, is to be torn down. Many politicians want to have done with the dilapidated wooden buildings in the shadow of the ancient Byzantine wall. They have offered the residents compensation and want to resettle them outside the city in new estates. Few people realize that the Roma were here on the Bosporus long before the Turks were. Pulling down Sulukule would not only be razing a historical district, but would also rob the Roma of their social cohesion. Many Turkish artists and intellectuals are backing the struggle against demolition.
