‘Deutsche Welle Media Dialogue’
“Our goal with this special series is to analyze regional media markets from an academic perspective,” says Gerda Meuer, Director of DW-AKADEMIE.
The concept behind the ‘Deutsche Welle Media Dialogue’ is to focus on one country at a time. At the center of each analysis will be the country’s media situation – looking at its various media branches and above all discussing problems and perspectives. The series is directed primarily at academics, politicians, media professionals from all branches, staff from non-governmental organisations and students.
"In addition to the annual Global Media Forum this new symposium series offers a second opportunity to critically debate about – and with – the media,” says Meuer. She stresses the series does not compete with the GMF. “Not at all – the symposia in fact complement it. So far, there is nothing comparable to this series in Germany.”
The first symposium is planned for April 21, 2010 in Bonn. The topic: ‘The Media Situation in Russia: Between State Control and Commercialization’. “We particularly want to focus on Russia given that conditions for journalists there have continually deteriorated over the last years,” Gerda Meuer says. The symposium series is to be held twice annually in Bonn.
