Speedy Skateboarder
September 3, 2008The male psyche lets loose on Germany's famed autobahns, where there are stretches of pristine highways without speed limits, but, contrary to many tourists' assumptions, there are speed restrictions on dangerous or steep sections. And they don't apply only to cars.
On Wednesday, Sept. 3, police said a helmeted figured clad in a sleek red and white protective body suit hung on a motorcycle to get up to speed before letting go down a slope on a restricted stretch of the Ulm-Stuttgart autobahn far above the 100 kph (62 mph) speed limit for all to witness on German national television. But the man managed to elude the police.
"We put out an all-points bulletin and have received information that gives us useful clues as to who the man may be," said Goeppingen police spokesman Uli Stoeckle.
The German magazine Stern though seems to know more than the police. The mystery speeder is known in skateboarding circles as a professional stuntman with a penchant for downhill racing competitions.
Stockle said if the police nab the speeder, the man would face charges for interfering with traffic safety and endangering other motorists. He would also face a "substantial fine" and lose his driver's license.
Which begs the question: How does a speeder lose his driver's license for skateboarding?
A look at a YouTube video dated June 16 gives you an idea.
