German police detained two British women who were so inebriated on a flight that they attacked cabin staff and tried to open the plane's door at 33,000 feet. The pilot of the aircraft made an emergency landing.

The plane, on its way from the Greek island of Kos to Manchester, England, made an unscheduled landing at Frankfurt International Airport after the two extremely drunk women, aged 26 and 27, got violent with flight attendents because they were refused alcohol.

A spokesman for the police at the airport said the 26-year-old repeatedly tried to strike a flight attendant with a vodka bottle the two had brought aboard because cabin crew had asked them to stop drinking from it.

The woman then tried to open one of the plane's doors.

"She evidently wanted to get some fresh air and tried to open the door, which obviously didn't work," spokesman Hartmut Scherer told Reuters. The plane was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet (10,000 meters) at the time.

After the landing, the two women were taken into custody and blood tests showed extremely high blood-alcohol levels. They will face charges of grievous bodily harm and violating air traffic regulations.

The plane continued its journey to Manchester after a two-hour delay. The airline company, which was not named, wants the costs of the unplanned stopover reimbursed, police said.
