Readers Disagree Over Mormon Church's Intentions

Following the recent death of the Mormon's spiritual leader, a German was appointed to one of the highest positions of the church. Many readers wrote in to address how outsiders perceive the Mormon religion.

President Dieter Uchtdorf made clear that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not a sect or cult, and when you look at the church's history it is evident that the church did not "break off" from any other religious organization. It is restored Christianity and encourages the practice of both the Old and New testaments' principles more than any other religious organization I know of. -- Richard Torgerson, USA

I believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is one of the most misunderstood religions in the world. There are many prejudices as a result of religious movements that actively promote anti-Mormon teachings, but unfortunately many of these are based on many falsehoods. -- Kent Blackhurst, USA

Mormonism began when Joseph Smith, the founder of the religion, declared that back in 1820 God told him not to join any of the churches in the state of New York because they were all wrong. How can any church claim to be "Christian" when one of their teachings is that Jesus and Satan are brothers? Can you really blame the German churches for being suspicious? -- John, Great Britain

Are Mormons a cult? Of course they are. They follow a central figure and do whatever he says. That figure is of course acting as Jesus Christ. -- Mark Bell, USA
