The Schuhplattler

The Schuhplattler, a spirited dance characterised by rhythmic slapping of the knees, thighs and feet, has a long tradition in Bavaria. As a courtship dance, only the unmarried are permitted to take part – indeed the dance is said to be based on the elaborate courtship rituals of the wood grouse. In the village of Krün Alexander meets Alois Kramer and the members of his "Gebirgstrachtenverein", a club dedicated to keeping the tradition alive. And judging from the vigour of their training sessions, with children as young as six taking part, the Schuhplattler isn’t going to die out any time soon.
