Size Does Matter

DW staff (win)December 5, 2004

A majority of German men only have themselves to blame when they're not having a good time in bed with their partner: According to a condom expert, they simply don't wear the appropriate size.

After asking more than 2,500 German men to measure their erect penises and asking them about their condom size, Jan Vinzenz Krause realized that something was seriously wrong with his countrymen: An overwhelming majority apparently used the wrong condom size.

"People measure their feet when they buy shoes," Krause, the owner of an online condom store, told reporters. "Why shouldn't they measure their penises? A man would not wear children's shoes."

While most condom boxes in Germany indicate size, embarrassed men rarely pay attention or take the time to measure their endowment. As a result, they usually resort to standard size condoms, which are 18 centimeters (seven inches) long and made for penises between 15.5 and 17 centimeters, according to Krause.

But the reason why many men don't enjoy sex with a condom is that they pick sizes that are too small for them.

Bragging doesn't seem to be a problem for German men, however: While 34 percent of those questioned in Krause's survey bought condoms that were too large for them, 48 percent chose those that were too small.
