For the first time, German carmaker Volkswagen sold more cars in China than at home in 2003. The company, which is China’s top automobile seller, found buyers for 697,961 cars of its VW and Audi brands, up 32 percent from the previous year. That amounts to about 14 percent of VW’s world wide sales of 5 million vehicles. In Germany, VW sold 519,500 cars in 2003. Within three years, Europe’s largest car manufacturer plans to sell two million autos in China. “It’s only a question of time before China becomes VW’s biggest market if the trend continues,” a company spokesman said. VW plans to invest about € 6 billion ($7.6 billion) in production plants in China over the next four years to keep up with the demand.
