Police in Berlin say they have released two men detained Wednesday over suspicions they were planning to hijack a plane to Moscow.

A woman had alerted police to the pair, aged 26 and 49, after overhearing them speaking in Russian about what she believed were plans to hijack an Air Berlin flight from the German capital's Tegel Airport.

Police arrested the pair and took them in for questioning, but were unable to corroborate the woman's account.

Following a search of the Air Berlin plane and questioning of all on board, passengers were allowed to depart for Moscow on a later flight.
