Emergency services were called to the home of the British fashion designer Alexander McQueen in central London on Thursday, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious. He was 40. Unconfirmed media reports said he had committed suicide.

His work was characterized in its early days by shocking inventiveness and his shows by outrageous effects. He became more moderate when he moved to Paris. At his death, he was creative director of his own label in which Gucci had a majority share.

McQueen had been due to present a new collection in Paris at March 9.
