Swine flu

As health officials around the world continue to monitor patients and investigate the cause of swine flu, DW looks back at how the infection spread and its impact on people and the world.

First detected in Mexico in late March, the current outbreak of swine flu, technically designated a H1N1 type A influenza virus, has demanded the attention of public health officials around the world who fear the virus could cause a pandemic.

Responsible for dozens of deaths in North and Central America, much remains unknown about the infection. Scientists are currently trying to determine why it appears to be relatively treatable outside of Mexico, how it was originally transmitted to humans and how effectively it could be treated with vaccines.
